Advanced Menswear: The Fabric Flower Lapel Pin

Some guys just aren't satisfied with handsomely tailored jackets and impeccable shirt/jacket/tie (or open chest) combinations. They need an extra touch of color somewhere on their torso to offset the workaday symmetry of the male uniform. Pocket squares do this, but you already know that. Hell, the entire cast of FOX NFL Sunday knows that. So if you're looking for something a little more daring and a lot less common, consider pinning a fabric flower to your lapel.

I first noticed these little lapel accents a few months ago while looking for inspiration on The Sartorialist, and I have since spotted them on a few celebrities and fashion forerunners. The men pictured above (photographed in Florence and Milan) probably got theirs from some ultra-cool Italian shop, but you'll most likely have to get yours from Etsy, an online marketplace for handmade crafts.

Just remember that you should only attempt to pull off a flower lapel pin as the final touch on an already sharp outfit that can hold its own without any accent pieces. Pinning one to a boxy jacket over a drab shirt and tie will only make things worse. Also, limit the flower to 1.5 inches or less in diameter. Anything larger than that is for weddings.

  1. Such an important caveat you make re ensuring the suit speaks for itself before you pin anything on it - otherwise you look like the result of some "pimp my suit" reality show.
