Khalifa means "successor" in Arabic, and Wiz is staking his claim as the next breakout MC in the current downbeat, sometimes melancholy, indie rap scene (see Kid Cudi). In "On My Level," Wiz morosely brags about his partying proficiency (not exactly a trailblazing topic) over a heavy Massive Attack-esque beat.
"Big Screen," while also self-congratulatory, is more up-tempo and is one of the best hip hop songs of 2011 (thus far). Wiz Kahlifa's new album, Rolling Papers, drops on March 29, and will establish whether he's truly a successor or just another short-term pretender.
